The Internet of Things

The internet of things (IoT) is an ecosystem envisioned by Intel, under which systems and devices in it are connected to the internet, enabling greater computing capabilities and allowing for value-added functionalities made possible through computing capabilities. For instance, data analytics can extract meaningful information about how existing equipment in a factory is used and with that perform analysis to help a business improve its production operations. When such a capability is extended across operations, applications and industries, IoT has the potential to make real transformative change to the way we live our lives.

While most devices and equipment such as cars or temperature sensors or kitchen appliances today already rely on some form of intelligence that helps them function, the IoT is a richer way of living and working by making these devices and equipment smarter.

Intel seeks to provide the building blocks for IoT solutions to deliver value and to enable businesses and developers to create solutions for the future within such a connected ecosystem.

The IoT has much potential to make Intel an even greater omnipresent part of our daily lives. Before that happens much focus and work needs to be done.

First, IoT is all about the power of connection, so collaboration with stakeholders in various industries and applications is key. Collaboration across the Intel ecosystem brings together the range of expertise and abilities required to create the IoT value chain.

This chain begins with components, such as processors, modules, operating systems, and security software that Original design manufacturers (ODMs) use to build boards that end up in things delivered by original equipment manufacturers (OEMS).

In turn, Systems integrators turn these things into industry-specific solutions with application and data analytics software. Network services connect things and cloud services, which take advantage of that analytics and application software to turn raw data into useful information.

While it is ideal to develop all at once applications within every industry, this is impossible given a limited pool of resources.

Within Singapore, The Insiders would recommend Intel focus IoT development work on the following core industries.
